What is meant by AC current

The current whose magnitude and direction remain alternating at a definite rate is termed as alternating current.

In India the electricity generated in hydro / thermal / nuclear power station is AC.

The domestic voltage of 230 volts 50Hz-60Hz AC is called the Low tension (LT) voltage. (In India)

Advantage of A.C supply

1) Can be easily converted to dc supply.

2) A.C can be developed up to kilo volts level after generation at low voltage level.

3) Reduced severity of electrical shock.

4) Voltage levels can be changed using simple devices called transformers.

5) AC can be transformed from low to high and high to low voltages without considerable

power loss.

6) Reduced transmission loss over very long distances.
